About Kilimanjaro

The pride of East Africa

Deep in Tanzania, the remarkable natural wonder of Mount Kilimanjaro proudly stands. As the world's tallest freestanding mountain, it reaches an impressive 19,341 feet (5,895 meters) — and is one of the coveted Seven Summits, drawing thrill-seekers from around the world.

One mountain, three cones

A trio of volcanic cones

Kilimanjaro is made of three distinct volcanic cones, each with its own character and height. Kibo is the tallest and holds the summit; Mawenzi and Shira flank it. Mawenzi and Shira are extinct, while Kibo is dormant — its last major eruption was nearly 200,000 years ago.

Changing landscapes on the slopes of Kilimanjaro

Five worlds in one climb

A mountain of many landscapes

Few climbs on Earth pass through so much in so few days. As you ascend Kilimanjaro you cross five distinct climatic zones — the vegetation shifts from lush rainforest to barren alpine desert, and the wildlife ranges from elusive leopards to playful monkeys, before the ice fields of the summit open onto the plains far below.

When to go

The best time to climb

Kilimanjaro can be climbed year-round. Here's how the seasons tend to feel on the mountain.

Warmest & driest

Jun · Jul · Aug · Dec · Jan · Feb

Traditionally the hotter, drier stretch of the year — a great time to climb.

Shoulder season

Sep · Oct

A touch colder, but the weather is still great for climbing.

Green season

Nov · Mar · Apr · May

Cooler and greener, with more chance of rain — still very climbable.

The ascent

Five climate zones, bottom to top

From farmland at the foot of the mountain to arctic ice at the roof of Africa — here's what changes beneath your boots as you climb.

Bushland and farmland on the lower slopes2,600–5,900 ft

Zone 1

Bushland / Lower Slope

The first zone you meet — small villages and farmland where bananas and coffee grow, offering a glimpse of daily life on the mountain's edge.

Rainforest zone on Kilimanjaro5,900–9,200 ft

Zone 2

Rainforest

A transition into lush rainforest — tall trees, birdsong, and glimpses of Colobus monkeys in the emerald canopy.

Moorland and heather zone9,200–13,100 ft

Zone 3

Moorland / Heather

Rolling heath and moorland dotted with heathers, mosses and lichens — plus rare giant lobelias and groundsel trees.

Alpine desert zone13,100–16,400 ft

Zone 4

Alpine Desert

A stark, rocky high-altitude desert — hardy, drought-resistant plants and big open skies.

Arctic summit zone with glaciers16,400–19,341 ft

Zone 5

Arctic

The harsh, otherworldly summit zone — ice, snow and glaciers at the roof of Africa.
